The midsole is the tallest thing on this shoe by a distance, and the problem with a stack that deep is that solid foam stops moving. So the wall is molded smooth and then cut through, into a cavity behind it. The row of windows down the side is where that stack does its compressing.

A midsole this tall, with a wall that has to be molded smooth and then cut through into the cavity behind it, is a considerably harder piece to make than a plain foam wedge, and it uses a lot more material to make.
